Robert Funderburk headed Cabin Creek Timber Frames raising crew when they attached the custom eastern white pine addition to an existing home in Louisville, KY this June.

Cabin Creeks timber framers then raised a custom timber frame home and porches in Highlands, NC the 3rd week in June. This custom timber frame was completely cut and trial fit in our beamery before it was ‘hand-hewn’ to achieve the look the client desired. The main timber frame was eastern white pine. The entry porch and the viewing porch was of cypress.

Cabin Creek raised a custom timber frame home on the Eastatoe River, near Lake Keowee, SC. . The custom timber frame was of eastern white pine and the porches were of cypress. The back porch over looked the river some 100 ft below.

Dr. Joe attends the TTRAG meeting held in Winston-Salem. There were interesting presentations on restoring old timber frames, including, posts, sill and rafters. There was a talk on the resurgence of lime mortar in the foundations. While there I renewed contacts involving the timber frame community, and toured buildings of Old Salem dating from the early 18th century. Dr. Joe participated in Green Building Conference held by the NC Association of Building Designers that was held in Charlotte, NC. Where they discussed a wide range of topics involving “green” building. Competing groups are vying to be leaders in the green movement. For an over view of this and its effects on timber framing, please see our website.

How ‘Deer Chase’ got its name. The 5 acres ‘Deer Chase’ is built on is at the base of Blaine Mountain. Long ago it was part of Hilliard Solesbee's dairy farm. A large portion of the property was a bog due to the numerous natural springs on the property. Dr. Joe put in at least nine French drains which have allowed the area to become a natural meadow. Many deer and turkey still forage there.

When we first started building our black lab “Tar” was a pup. He befriended a yearling. They would take turns chasing each other back and forth across the field. We have watched them “play” for as long as forty minutes…...as long as neither gets closer to the other than 40 feet. Each year we think that will be the last year for “play” time—but it continues still.

Open House at
Deer Chase
Each summer and fall we try to hold an open house at ‘Deer Chase’. The first open house this fall held the on September 22nd. This open house allowed some of the individuals that we have already built timber frames for and potential clients to mix and mingle. We have found it beneficial to give former clients and new clients the opportunity for the free exchange of ideas. Usually someone in the mix has an answer to your questions.

The menu of the day was chili and corn bread.

We will be holding an open house at our office complex greet on Saturday October 20th, 2007 from 1 –5 PM. Please contact Tracy Bailey or Jo Bell at 828-369-5899 for more details. We would love to meet with you.

Deer Chases ‘great room’ was built as a demonstration frame for a Log & Timber Frame show Cabin Creek Timber Frames participated in at Cobb Galleria some years ago.

It was also on view at the Whistle Stop Antiques Mall , Franklin, NC and the Home Show at the Palmetto Expo Center in Greenville, SC before it became Dr Joe’s & Miss Jo’s great room at Deer Chase.
